A Rockmart man was sentenced to probation, issued a $1,500 fine and ordered to stay away from railroad property after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing railroad spikes.

Dontavious Darden, no age listed, of 527 Springdale Road, Rockmart, pleaded guilty on charges of theft by taking and criminal trespass.

Officers arrested Darden and Justin Ballew, of Aragon, Aug. 7, 2011, regarding alleged theft of railroad spikes, according to court testimony.

Darden was also charged with probation violation because he had just started a seven-year probation at the time of this arrest, according to courtroom testimony. He was released in February.

Superior Court Judge Richard Sutton agreed to credit Darden for the jail time already served and sentenced Darden to 10 years probation, along with the fine and orders to stay off railroad property.

Ballew’s case is still going through the court.
