The identity or cause of death have not been determined, according to Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd.
Dodd said someone found a human bone about 200 yards off the road near Georgia Highway 113 around 1 p.m.
They called police, who secured the scene, collected evidence and called the coroner. Dodd said the coroner collected the remains and sent them to the Georgia State Crime Lab in Atlanta, where forsenic experts will identify the person and the cause of the death.
Meanwhile, Dodd said police are searching through missing persons reports from Polk County and surrounding areas to connect with the remains.
He said investigators are also working on obtaining dental records and DNA in an attempt to identify the remains.
However, he said the investigation could be stalled by a backlog at the Georgia Crime Lab. Dodd said he isn't sure where this case falls on the priority list at the Atlanta facility and the lab has had to handle more caseload ever since the state shut down two smaller facilities because of budget cuts.
