Polk School District Superintendent Marvin Williams signed a contract Wednesday to proceed with construction of a new elementary school near Cedartown.

The new Youngs Grove Elementary is still waiting for ground to be broken. Plans are for it to open in August 2010.

Located about six miles outside of Cedartown, the school will be built at the corner of Antioch Road and Wooten Road and encompass 64 acres of land.

A drawing of the school’s footprint has the school sitting about midway in between a late 1800s to 1900s cemetery and Youngs Grove Baptist Church. Plans are to leave most of the wooded area around the school intact.

With a capacity of 650 students, the new school is being built with capacity for expansion in mind. Craig Buckley is the project's architect.

Step up to the bat folks. Leaving all the trees, what about all those that were cut down from around the High School. Remember When? Maybe the school board could make some money by selling the timber.
