The former Bernie Sue Smitherman, She was born in Piedmont, Ala. on Feb. 1, 1935, the daughter of the late Daniel and Carrie Farmer Smitherman.
Mrs. Huckaby was a 1952 graduate of the Cave Spring High School. She was associated with the Georgia School for the Deaf for 34 years prior to her retirement in 1997.
Mrs. Huckaby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring, and was a former member of the Roman Square Square Dancers and of the Cave Spring Garden Club.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Smitherman.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Buck Huckaby, to whom she was married Sept. 1, 1951; her son, Phil Huckaby of Ranger and her daughter, Teresa Huckaby of Cave Spring. A brother, Emeris Smitherman of St. Simmons Island, four grandchildren, Hannah Casey Huckaby and a special niece also survive.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel Funeral Home with Tom Payne and Jim Whitworth officiating.
Interment followed in the Cave Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Sam Huckaby, Luke Brown, Zach Brown, Gary Kerr, Frank Payne and Larry Huckaby.
