Our House, the Polk County Women’s Shelter Inc., in Cedartown, will host its 14th Annual Benefit Breakfast Saturday, Oct. 20.

The fund-raiser begins at 9 a.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church, 224 New Harmony Road (off Prior Station Road) in Cedartown. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased by calling 770-748-2300. The event includes a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the women’s shelter.

The guest speaker for this year’s breakfast is Olga Trujillo. She is an independent consultant, nationally renowned speaker, survivor and attorney dedicated to enhancing the understanding of – and building effective responses to – violence against women and children.

Trujillo witnessed her father’s brutal and terrifying attacks on her mother. She herself suffered constant physical, emotional and sexual abuse from her father and her brothers. She also suffered, as she grew older, from others outside her family.

With clarity borne from years of intensive work, Trujillo has unraveled the impact of violence in her life. This insight, combined with more than a decade of experience working with advocates from a national to a grass-roots level, guides and inspires her word today.

Trujillo’s career began in the early ’90s at the U.S. Department of Justice. For four years, she served as general counsel to the Office of Justice Programs. She was the youngest woman and the only Latina to ever hold this position.

In 1995, she joined the Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime as legal counsel, and subsequently became director of the Special Projects Division. Her rare combination of personal experience and professional skills compelled her to create ORT Solutions in 2001 (now renamed Olga Trujillo Consulting).
