For now, though, the Bulldogs are glad to be heading in the opposite direction of Macon and that’s to Dalton this Saturday for their Class AAA state quarterfinal game against Gainesville. Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center.
Cedartown (21-9) finished as the Region 6-AAA runner-up but have posted back-to-back state playoff wins at home to find themselves in unchartered waters. The two state playoff wins in one season is thought to be a first for the boys basketball team.
The Bulldogs, who defeated St. Pius X 56-44 in round one and North Hall 54-50 in round two, will face a Gainesville team that appears to be peaking at the right time.
Gainesville (20-8) won Region 7-AAA and then dismantled their two playoff opponents, beating Eastside-Covington 66-43 and stopping Druid Hills 60-39. Players to watch for the Red Elephants are junior guard Blake Sims, senior guard George Manomano and 6-foot- 3 senior Juwon Jeffries.
Several other area teams will also be playing this weekend in the Elite Eight, including the Coosa Eagles who, despite a losing record, continue to play solid ball in the postseason.
