The Georgia Department of Public Health says 87 of the state's 181 school districts, or 48 percent, are on board. Under the policy, no student, staff member or school visitor is permitted to use any tobacco product or E-cigarette, at any time on school property.
Health officials say they still have a lot of work to do this year to get the remaining 95 school districts to adopt a tobacco-free policy.
School districts can get help from local health departments to implement the policy. Each district has a health promotion coordinator who can present the policy to the local school board and work with school administrators to implement it.
