Last year the office furniture company raised $14,000 through the tournament which was given out to local charity organizations.
There were a total of 27 teams that signed up to play in the event; some of the teams came from as far away as Chicago, Ill.
According to Clay Cooper, Member and Community Relations Manager at HON, the company hopes to raise the number of participating teams to 30 this year.
The teams are usually sponsored by business partners of HON, such as suppliers and shipping companies. HON is also looking to recruit local teams and donors.
Cooper stated that there will be activities other than the golf tournament. Some of these activities include a contest where donors can attempt to chip into a HON filing cabinet, a hole-in-one contest and an “outdrive the V.P.” contest.
The “out drive the V.P.” contest is an activity where, for a donation, teams attempt to drive a ball farther than the Vice President of Manufacturing, Todd Murphy. Those who successfully out drive Murphy win chances in a drawing for a prize.
“I only play golf a few times a year, so it’s not much of a challenge,” said Murphy with a laugh. “It’s a way for me to get to meet every person who comes through the tournament and thank them for participating.”
Murphy said that he won’t do just one drive at the beginning of the day for people to beat, but he will hit a ball with every single group.
The hole-in-one tournament will be on the seventh hole, a 178 yard par-3 hole.
Participants of this contest have a chance to win a 2013 Kawasaki Mule 610 4x4 XC from Kawasaki of Rome.
Other prizes for the various contests will be various golf apparel and equipment donated by local businesses as well as office furniture donated by HON.
“The whole community is involved through sponsorships,” said Cooper. “You can get your name on a tee box or you can get together a team. Local organizations donate some of the food, beverages and prizes for the tournament.”
Brett Pirkle, of Pirkle’s Deli, will be providing food for the tournament.
“He’s been a sponsor every year,” said Murphy. “He brings his grill out and cooks for everyone.”
The HON employees organizing the event commented that the biggest need is to get as much local support for the tournament as possible.
