JONESBORO, GA. — Police say a gunshot that struck a child in the backseat of her mother's minivan just south of Atlanta was fired from inside the vehicle.

The 4-year-old girl, who was shot in the head, was being treated at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Her condition wasn't immediately known.

Authorities say the mother heard a popping sound late Wednesday morning, than turned around to see her daughter slumped over in the backseat. The gunfire happened near Georgia 54 and Fayetteville Road in the Jonesboro area.

Clayton County police Lt. Chris Windley tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that a weapon was confiscated and the van has been impounded for further investigation.
