By 2 p.m. Tuesday, hair stylist and local business owner Hal Floyd and his staff had provided more than 100 free “back-to-school” haircuts for children.

Floyd is the owner of FHF Hair Design studio on Main Street in Cedartown. This is the third year that Floyd has provided the free haircuts for returning students. According o Floyd, they gave away around 80 to 100 haircuts last year and their goal was to raise that number this year.

“We’re mainly doing this for people who are having financial problems and are trying to get their kids back to school,” said Floyd.

“When I was a kid I had to choose between getting a haircut or new clothes when I went back to school and I always had to choose to get new clothes,” said Floyd. “My mother would put scotch tape across my bangs and cut it that way. I think it’s important for kids’ self-confidence, I know it hurt my confidence going back to school without a haircut.”

Floyd was not be the only hair stylist giving away the free haircuts. Along with the other two stylists in his shop, Christopher Cromer, Pam Robinson and Jared Dennis came from out of town to give the haircuts making a total of six stylists who were working all day for free.

According to Floyd, there are many people in the community who also came by and helped with the event by cleaning up the hair clippings and giving away food and school supplies that have been donated.

“I always try to encourage any business to take one day away from their regular business to designate it to a charity,” said Floyd. “I step away from what I normally do for one day just to give back. I think if every business on Main Street would just do this, we could build a better community.”

This year, many people have donated school supplies and food to the studio to be given out to children during the event. FHF Designs made goodie bags and gave them out to the kids who are coming in to get their hair cut.

Floyd is a Cedartown native. He studied and worked in many locations including Atlanta and New York before he decided to return to Cedartown to open his studio on Main Street.

“I’ve always said that if God gave me a place of this nature, that I would not only use it for hair, but I would use it for the greater good of the community,” said Floyd.
