COLUMBUS, GA. — Police say the body of a man who tried to swim across the Chattahoochee River has been recovered in Columbus.

Authorities tell The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that 23-year-old Jarvis Willis of Russell County went under while swimming with two others around 9 p.m. Sunday.

His body was recovered Monday morning.

Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower said he swam across the river, but he didn't make it back. The coroner said a man Willis was swimming with turned back to help and grabbed him, but his grip didn't hold and Willis disappeared under the water.
