The end of an era for the Polk School District was announced during the community input session Tuesday night.

Superintendent Marvin Williams announced his intention to retire as superintendent and read a letter of resignation to the school board effective Nov. 30, 2012.

Williams, who has been an employee of the Polk School District for 32 years, said it was a tough decision but there was no doubt it was time for him to retire.

"I will continue to serve as superintendent until November 30, and I want the students to know I am excited about the upcoming year and some of the opportunities that are coming," Williams said

Williams has been the superintendent since May of 2007.

Chairman Chuck Thaxton thanked Williams for his service and opened the table for discussion about the replacement process.

"Finding a new superintendent is our decision," Thaxton said. "Marvin's not here to replace himself and would like to stay out of the process as much as possible."

Board member Dan Forsyth said he had been on the board during previous times when they had to find a new superintendent. He said one option was to approach the Georgia School Board Association for help and another was to create a committee on the board to search for candidates.

Several other options were suggested, including waiting until the new board is seated in January to replace Williams.

No official decision was made on the replacement process during the meeting. A regular session meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

If you really want to show your appreciation and respect for Mr. Williams you might start by using the correct word for his former position and you might want to capitalize correctly and even use correct grammar.

Mr. Williams was my favorite principle i was at Goodyear with him and he paddled me in the second grade, now how do i remember that. LOL.. and i also was at the old high school. he was strict on everyone but now that im a parent of two i get the BIG picture he was trying to get us to see. i am proud for Mr. Williams maybe he will try out for American idol and win since you don't have to worry about politics anymore.

A lot of people got mad because he wanted to go to school uniforms, i am not gonna lie i was one of those parents but now i look at how the economy is that would have been a great idea because all the money i am spending on school clothes i could be putting in my gas tank to make it to work. :-)

He was A great Principle Also, i went to purks middle school when he was the principle and he turned our whole school around!! My Best friend was at Rock-mart High School when he was the principle and he did the same thing at the high school. so people can say what they want about him he has changed so many lives in our school system. people Complain about our school system but if Mr. Williams would have not stepped in then who knows how bad the school system would be. and what people don't realize is that just because your the superintendent does not mean that you have make all the calls, the Board votes the superintendent only makes recommendations. So if he recommends something and the board shoots it down its nothing he can do. Court1 maybe you should run for it since you had something to say about how the school system is running.

He was principal at Goodyear, one of the Cedartown Middle schools before they were combined, and RHS. Maybe they should check facts before posting he was principal at Cedartown Middle School only.

Several points to make:

1) This is the Board's time to really make a good move and improve our schools in Polk County.

2) Please go outside the "good old boys" network and fined someone to make a difference and not just continue down the road we have been on for years.

(and No, that does not mean bring Teresa Treadaway out of retirement)

Williams was Prinicpal at Rockmart High School not CMS.

I think the Board needs to ask Teresa Treadaway to come out of retirement.
