ATHENS, GA. — An iconic fence that often serves as a backdrop for photographs on the University of Georgia campus in Athens is getting a make-over.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that the cast iron fence includes the landmark Arch, and is among the most popular spots for photos on the campus. Parts of one section of the fence date to 1857.

University of Georgia employee Janine Duncan and other staff have been working to refurbish a section that runs from the Arch to Jackson Street in May as part of an ongoing repair and preservation project. Other parts of the fence will be refurbished later, as part of the overall restoration project.
