TVA spokesman Travis Brickey told The Knoxville News Sentinel the incident at Stevenson, Ala., is an example of why the federal utility has stepped up the cutting of vegetation along power lines.
In the 2010 incident, electricity arced from a line 40 feet above the ground to a 37-foot-talll black willow tree under the line. TVA was able to continue service without interruption.
The North American Electric Reliability Corp. posted notice on its website, stating TVA has agreed to pay a $175,000 fine and fix the problem that caused the incident. The agency enforces standards for the nation's power grid.
