He was born on Jan. 29, 1935 and raised in Hiram.
Dr. Mitchell lived in Cedartown for over 50 years. In his younger years he obtained an education from Hiram Elementary School and Hiram High School, Graduating in 1952. From 1952-1958 he attended Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Mitchell proceeded on to Emory University School of Dentistry, receiving a Doctorate of Dental Surgery Degree in 1959 and was licensed by the state of Georgia in 1959.
Within the same year he began practicing dentistry, opening his practice in Polk County. He was an adored dentist with dedicated patients, and practiced dentistry for 53 years, until his final days.
Dr. Mitchell was the former President of Tri-County Tuberculosis Association (Polk-Bartow-Floyd). He was the former member of the Cedartown Board of Education. He was a former member of the Cedartown Lions Club and the former member of the Cedartown “50” Club.
He was a devoted member of Southside Baptist Church. He was a Sunday School Director for many years and he was an enthusiastic participant in the Volunteer Jail Ministry.
Survivors include his wife, Donna D. Mitchell, to whom he was married for 34 years; four sons, Rodney R. Mitchell Jr., Durham, N.C., Samuel C. Mitchell and his wife, Connie, Rome, Zach P. Mitchell, Marietta and James P. Mitchell, Cedartown; a daughter, Erika M. Abercrombie and her husband, Richard; Chattanooga; and a step-brother, Jeff Porter.
He was preceded in death by his mother Mildred Mitchell Porter; father Marion Carl Mitchell and his stepfather Bill Porter.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church. Rev. Joel Smith, and Rev. Roger Whorton will officiated.
Pallbearers were Jeremy Tracy, Wayne Couch, Sean Couch, Bobby Jones, Tony Tyler and Tony Brock.
