Playing with a determination that could not be matched by the opposition, the local Rockmart club won the District 1 tournament last Saturday and will now compete in the nine-and-10-year-old Little League State tournament in Rockmart.
According to Little League president Lee Hayes, Rockmart will host the nine-and-10-year-old State tournament July 14-20. Hayes said Rockmart’s first game at state will be Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Athens.
The tournament will have opening ceremonies on Saturday, July 14 at 11:30 a.m., with every team being invited to participate. Play will officially get under way at 12:30 p.m. that day.
Lee noted that from July 14-18 four games will be played each day as the opening portion of tournament play is pool play. Games are scheduled for 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. for the first five days.
On Thursday, July 19 semifinal games will be played and the State championship game will be Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m.
Ten District winners from all over the state will make up the tournament field.
Rockmart made state by winning the District tournament on Saturday, July 7. Rockmart had advanced out of double pool play to square off with Cartersville in the best-of-three championship series.
Hayes said that Rockmart won 9-4 and then 15-2 to win the title.
“We invite all the Rockmart people to come out and support these kids,” Hayes said. “They will have one game every day from Sunday until Wednesday.”
