For the first time in 10 years, Rockmart Little League will be hosting a State tournament.

According to Little League president Lee Hayes, Rockmart will host the nine-and-10-year-old State tournament July 14-20.

“It should boost the economy a little bit,” Hayes said, noting that teams from across the state will most likely be staying at hotels in Polk County and eating at local restaurants. “Maybe it will pump some money back in the county.”

The tournament will have opening ceremonies on Saturday, July 14 at 11:30 a.m., with every team being invited to participate. Play will officially get under way at 12:30 p.m. that day.

Lee noted that from July 14-18 four games will be played each day as the opening portion of tournament play is pool play. Games are scheduled for 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. for the first five days.

On Thursday, July 19 semifinal games will be played and the State championship game will be Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m.

Ten District winners from all over the state will make up the tournament field.

“Teams from all over the state will be coming,” Hayes said. “South Georgia, middle Georgia, west Georgia, east Georgia, and north Georgia.”
