Volunteers Angela and Douglas Fry are participating in the Seamless Summer Nutrition Program in Rockmart.

They arrive at Hogue Avenue gym with their daughters Jenna and Morgan to hand out free meals to all participants from grade pre-k through age 18.

Soon after they unloaded the boxes of food, a small dark-haired boy peeked through the door, turned and waved for several other children to follow him.

Some walked quickly into the building, received the boxed meal and milk while others were more hesitant.

However, all were there for the same reason - lunch. They were polite and voiced their appreciation.

Several expressed wonder at what they were given.

One child said, “Wow! I have a blueberry muffin.”

This led to comments of what type of sandwich and other good things to eat they received.

Angela, a schoolteacher, said she enjoyed seeing the smiles of the children.

“It is a wonderful experience to talk to them and see them get nourishing food,” she said.

Her children, who handed out milk, greeted each child with words of welcome and encouragement.

“I like to help,” said Jenna. “Me too,” echoed Morgan.

Dean Timmons, director, Polk School District Food Service, said all grade and/or age eligible students are encouraged to participate. The program will operate Monday through Friday through Aug. 10.

Last summer, a total of 250 meals per day were served at several sites in Rockmart.

The Rockmart/Aragon Ministerial Association sponsored these.

Meals are not only being distributed from 12 to 1 p.m. daily at Hogue Avenue gym, but also from the old Buy-Low building, across from the former Elm Street School property, and Aragon Community Center.
