The 2009 Polk County Relay For Life Planning/Steering Committee met Thursday night at Frankie’s Italian Restaurant in Rockmart for a planning session.
Organizers set a tentative date of May 1 for the Polk County Relay for Life, an annual event that raises money for cancer research.
A concern was that the planned date might conflict with the Special Olympics activities, which are scheduled to end April 30 but have a rain date of May 1.
Organizers said even with a rain delay, the sports activities would conclude before Relay events began that Friday afternoon. However, a rain delay could push the Special Olympics into the time that volunteers would normally be setting up tents and making other preparations ready.
An alternative date of May 8 was discussed -- however, that would mean holding the Relay on the weekend preceding Mother's Day (Sunday, May 10).
Organizers said a final date will be decided and announced soon.
Meanwhile, other planning dates were set. The first team meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Victory Baptist Church on U.S. Highway 278 between Rockmart and Cedartown.
This year's theme is “Lights - Camera - CURE!” Teams will be encouraged to choose a movie and decorate according to the theme.
Call co-chair Nancy Wright, 770-684-0418, for more information.

As for the prom, Relay is an ALL NIGHT, OUTDOOR event that many people in Rockmart participate in. It is on Friday night, but many people spend the next day tired and trying to catch up on their sleep. So the Friday before Rockmart or Cedartown's proms would be a bad idea. And, Prom is held INSIDE, so rain would not affect it.
Both Relay for Life and The Special Olympics are very important. We as a community should be supporting both, hope that they go well, and have beautiful weather.
Unfortunately May 15 is the day of the Rockmart Prom and we do not want to interfere with that very important event."
I guess to some people, the Rockmart Prom is way more important than the Special Olympics. Personally, I dont think so.
"Organizers said even with a rain delay, the sports activities would conclude before Relay events began that Friday afternoon. However, a rain delay could push the Special Olympics into the time that volunteers would normally be setting up tents and making other preparations ready."
So, does this mean that even with a rain delay, that people would still be getting ready for the prom? Doing pictures, etc? Does prom take all day and all night?
