Three people face charges after being arrested for allegedly trying to steal from a power pole, according to Rockmart police reports.

Nancie Ann Borders, 38, William Lee Proffit, 29, and Brent Dontrail Washington, 28, all of Rockmart, face charges of criminal trespass and theft by taking, reports state.

They were arrested around 1:20 p.m. Sunday after several people called 911 to report suspicious activity at the Norfolk Southern Rail yard at 200 College St., Rockmart.

Witnesses saw a male on a ladder at a power pole with a female at the bottom of the ladder. Police said a black truck across the street attempted to flee.

Police officers said they instantly recognized the man on the ladder as Proffit and the woman as Borders.

Officers said Proffit was extremely jerky and possibly high on methamphetamine when they questioned him.

Proffit told officers a salon had paid him to hook up her cable and that is what he was doing. He said Borders and Washington didn’t know what he was doing.

Officers stated in reports that no trespassing signs are clearly displayed by the railroad company and climbing the pole was committing theft.

Railroad police told local authorities they would let the charges remain with Rockmart police but if the trio were found on railroad property again, then Norfolk Southern would seek their own charges.
