Two fires Wednesday afternoon kept Polk County Volunteer and Georgia Forestry firefighters busy, according to officials.

The first fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. on Chubbtown Road, according to Polk County Safety Director Randy Lacey.

That’s where an abandoned house caught fire, he said.

The wood structure was quickly engulfed in flames, he said. Lacey said smoke could be seen from Highway 27 and even from the Polk County Emergency Management Agency office.

He said Georgia Forestry was called in because the house was near a wooded area and firefighters feared sparks would spread to the woods.

The house, which he called a “pretty old structure,” had been vacant for a long time.

Lacey said the fact it was vacant is prompting an investigation because there was no electricity running through it to cause a fire.

Lacey said some firefighters had to leave the Chubbtown Road fire to handle a brush fire off of Highway 113 in Taylorsville.

Georgia Forestry firefighters were soon called, prompting them to also rush from the Chubbtown Road fire to Taylorsville, Lacey said.

The blaze took more than two hours to get under control with forestry officials creating breakers all around it, he said.

No one was injured in either fire.

Lacey said there is nothing suspicious about the Taylorsville woods fire.

“Right now is extremely dry weather with low humidity,” he said, adding that he’s expecting more woods fires to pop up until it rains.
