The young Yellow Jackets went 9-6-1 on the season, including posting two tournament wins.
At the end of the year tournament, Rockmart defeated Cartersville 11-5 in the first round.
Chet Miller pitched five innings in that game, allowing only five hits. Will Deems went 3-for-3 and scored three times while Austin Cowan added two hits and four RBI’s.
After a second round loss to Darlington by the score of 4-0, Rockmart bounced back to defeat Chattooga. Miller pitched this game as well, throwing five innings and allowing only six hits. Cowan had an RBI double in the contest, head coach Archie Scott noted.
In the fourth tournament game, the Yellow Jackets fell to Coosa 6-5 to be eliminated from the tournament and for their season to end.
“Our record of 9-6-1 was our best finish in recent years,” Scott said. “This years eighth grade group put up some wonderful statistics.
"We had four players bat over .400, including seventh grader Cam Jones who led the team with a .486 battinag average. Austin Cowan led the team with 16 RBI’s and Cam Jones had 18 runs to lead us.”
Pitching wise, Scott noted the strong performances of Will Deems, Chris Short, and Chet Miller.
“They threw the majority of the innings for the team,” Scott said.
The middle school junior varsity squad went 11-5 this year.
“In the tournament they put together a run and made it all the way to the championship game,” Scott said. “They suffered a 6-4 loss in the final game against Rome.”
