ATLANTA — Atlanta police say they believe one of their officers was targeted by a gunman who might have been firing from a nearby rooftop.

Police say the officer was leaving a restaurant on Moreland Avenue in the city's Little Five Points neighborhood and was walking back to his car when he was wounded in the leg around 11 p.m. Thursday.

Police tell WSB-TV that investigators believe the shooter waited for the officer to get out of the restaurant, then fired six to seven shots. Investigators were searching a nearby rooftop for shell casings and other evidence.

The officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower left leg. Authorities said he was alert, breathing and conscious when taken to the hospital and was in stable condition.
