Bond was set at $150,000 for an Aragon man accused of killing his wife last year.

The hearing for Shay Merritt, 31, of 11 East 2nd St., Aragon, was held in Superior Court Judge Michael Murphy’s chambers Tuesday morning.

The hearing was not open to the public or the media.

Family members waiting in the courtroom left after a prosecutor gave them the news.

Merritt is accused of murdering his wife, Rita Merritt, 27, of the same address, last September.

Police found Rita Merritt dead in her home after her husband called into 911 saying she had attempted to commit suicide.

An investigation and a confession led police to charging Merritt for the homicide, according to police officials.

Merritt has been in the Polk County Jail ever since his arrest.

District Attorney Robert Brooks said, by law, a judge had to set bond for Merritt. The law states a suspect can only be incarcerated up to 90 days without bond being set or being indicted by a grand jury.

The next grand jury is meeting next month, Brooks said.
