The Polk County Police Department would like to give the public advance notice about a new 4-way stop to be placed at the intersection of Collard Valley Road and Pine Pitch and Lindsey Chapel Roads.

The 4-way stop will be in place sometime in the next 30 days according to Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd, though Dodd could not provide an exact date.

Currently there is a stop sign on Lindsey Chapel and Pine Pitch, but not at Collard Valley Road. A stop sign will be placed on Collard Valley in both directions.

“We’ve had 14 wrecks at that intersection since Jan. 1, 2005,” Dodd said. He went on to explain that is a lot of wrecks for such a rural area.

The stop signs have been approved by the County Commission and Dodd pointed out that the State Patrol also felt a 4-way stop needed to be there.

Dodd stated that the worst area of the intersection is from Pine Pitch turning onto Collard Valley because of a limited sight distance.

Officials hope to also have signs within 500 feet of the stop sign to warn motorists.

Additionally Dodd wants to inform the public that police will monitor the stop sign.

“For the first 30 days, we will only issue warnings for violations at the 4-way stop. We will pull people over, but we will only give them a warning,” Dodd said. “We are going to do this just to let people know,” he added.

After the 30 day grace period police will begin issuing citations for a violation.

“We don’t want to surprise people, we want to let them know ahead of time,” Dodd said. He added, “The reason for doing this is because that is a dangerous intersection.”

I'm glad one of the dangerous intersections is being addressed. Thank you, Chief Dodd & Commissioners. Now if we can address the others. There have been several deaths on 278 in Fish Creek since it was 4-laned. There were rumors in the beginning that a red light would be placed at Cowboy's (Barber/Bethlehem Rd./278 Intersection). But then the DOT told a relative of mine that they would not consider a red light there until there was a fatality. So no one feels safe using that intersection and all the deaths have been at the next couple of intersections in either direction, possibly because everyone tries to avoid turning at Cowboy's. Does anyone know who's responsible for red light placement? I'm sure there's places all over the county that need this addressed, but with 27 and 278 being state/US highways, how do we know who to contact?

Okay, I did not put down everything that was on my mind about this situation. If we put a red light up at the high school or at either intersections, this would slow down traffic for our young adults who are pulling out at CHS.

I understand the 4 way stop (in some ways) but I can't understand is why put up a stop sign where we have had 14 wrecks since 2005 and not a red light where we have had 14 wrecks in a year? I am talking about the Cedartown Bypass at the Collard Valley intersection or Blanche Rd Intersection. Why wait until we have another child killed to do something about this?
