Workers from Custom Design Landscapes worked Wednesday to try to keep water pipes laying on the ground from freezing at a rental house owned by the business’ owner.
That is particularly true of those in the heating and air business.
Rhonda Farmer, office manager for Haynes Heating & Air Conditioning Inc., which services Cedartown and Rockmart, said the past two days have been busy.
“It’s not quite doubled but it’s close,” she said.
Farmer said people who have no heat make up many of the calls, but the majority of calls are those whose heaters just aren’t working correctly.
“When it gets this cold, it has to work harder and it will break down,” she said, pointing out that regular maintenance could prevent those situations.
“It’s really important to get it serviced beforehand so you won’t be out of heat,” she said.
Robert Harrison, owner of Harrison Heating and Air of Rockmart, said he has been a littler busier this week than in past weeks. However, he said winter tends to be his slow season unless it stays cold for a long period of time.
“Heating and air is funny,” he said. “In the summer, I don’t have to worry about business because of air conditioning. People won’t live without it.
“With heat, it has to be pretty cold before people will call.”
Another concern that comes with winter weather is water pipes. Local plumbers say, so far, there haven’t been any problems with pipes bursting.
“Pipes usually don’t burst unless it gets pretty cold and it stays cold for a couple of days,” said Randy Puckett, who owns Puckett Plumbing in Cedartown.
