ATLANTA -- The federal government and advocacy groups are urging a federal appeals court to block enforcement of Alabama's strict law targeting illegal immigration pending the outcome of a legal challenge.

The U.S. Department of Justice says in a filing Wednesday with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that the law oversteps the state's authority to enforce immigration law. Advocacy group in a separate filing provided examples of people they say have been harmed by the law.

Copies of the filings were provided by groups challenging the law.

Alabama had said in a filing Tuesday that the law fell well within its rights and said there was no evidence the law was causing irreparable harm.

The law is considered one of the nation's toughest.
