Plaintiffs' attorney Jeff Friedman said in an opening statement at the Knoxville trial that TVA records from both decades before and just months before the spill of 1.2 billion gallons of toxic-laden sludge at the Kingston Plant on the Emory River show warnings about storing the ash were ignored.
TVA attorney Edwin Small compared the cause to an internal crack in an airplane wing that leads to a crash.
A TVA engineer testified he was new on the job and was just conducting a visual inspection of the ash pond two months before the spill.
