Chancellor Hank Huckaby told the state Board of Regents on Wednesday he knew the move would be controversial. But he said the system must ensure that it has the "right number of campuses and in the right places."
Huckaby said no specific plans have been made yet to consolidate any of the state's 35 public colleges and he urged campuses "not to panic."
Georgia's university system has been grappling with deep state budget cuts and students this fall began paying up to $450 more per semester in tuition and fees.
