ATLANTA -- Poultry industry executives say a big increase in the cost of feed corn, higher fuel prices and lower prices for chicken are putting strong financial pressures on the industry.

Sanderson Farms, one of the nation's largest poultry producers, says it lost $56 million in its most recent three-month period, despite higher sales.

The poultry business employs 100,000 people in Georgia, directly or indirectly, and contributes about $13 billion to the economy each year. The state has 3,800 poultry farms and is the largest poultry producer in the U.S.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Tom Hensley, president of Baldwin-based Fieldale Farms, expects that U.S. production of chicken, now about 160 million head processed each week, will be trimmed to less than 150 million, pushing up prices.
