Ed Roach, Cashtown Loop near Aragon, has been busy showing friends, co-workers and neighbors his big cantaloupe.

Roach proudly displayed the giant specimen, which weighed 20 1/2 pounds, to co-workers in Rockmart’s Public Works Department. On the same day, he showed another one that weighed 15-3/4 pounds.

A gardener for about 40 years, he has grown other giant vegetables near his home.

This year, he has two gardens where favorite vegetables — corn, potatoes, green beans, pepper, okra and tomatoes — are grown.

The rewards of hard work and tender, loving care by Roach has produced a bounty of fine specimens.

Everything has exploded with growth despite the dry weather.

“I harvested potatoes as big as softballs and picked 30 to 40 gallons of tomatoes for home canning and preservation,” he said.

“A garden requires plenty of hard work, but I enjoy it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ed plans how he and his wife, Shelvie, will devour all the good things coming from his garden — including the cantaloupes.
