With running enthusiasts once again waking up early to kick off the full day of the 2011 Homespun Festival, overcast skies kept the temperatures cool and a slight drizzle lasted just long enough to greet athletes as they headed out on the Silver Comet Trail.
A pair of young competitors took the top prizes this year as Rockmart High School student Brent Costin crossed the finish line first and upcoming Darlington freshman Lauren Hooper won the female title for the second year in a row.
Costin, who will be a junior this fall, posted a time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds while Hooper placed 19th overall with a time of 22:10.
It felt good out there. It was really nice,” Costin said. “This is the first time since I’ve started running that I’ve actually ran this race. It’s pretty flat.”
The start and finish of the race are situated along Water Street next to the First United Methodist Church and Crossview Community Church organized the race for the third year.
“I thought I should have ran a half-minute faster and be under 18 (minutes) but it’s still good,” Costin said. “I’m still happy with it.”
Hooper, who is from Rome, was able to convince her mother to run the race with her this year and had her aunt there to support her as well.
“I just really wanted to beat my time from last year,” Hooper said. “It’s really a flat course and that’s why I like it. I like hills but I get a horrible time when I run on them.”
Hooper didn’t better her time from 2010 but the 14-year-old said the rain and unlike-summer temperatures helped her to keep ahead of her competitors.
“It was a lot cooler than usual,” she said. “In other races, it’s already hot by eight o’clock so it felt better today.”
Both Costin and Hooper were presented a trophy and a $75 gift card to The Sports Authority for their first-place finishes.
“It turned out as good as we expected,” race organizer Ashley Bratcher said. “The runners seemed really happy with the new overall prizes that we had this year and we got a lot of positive feedback.”
Bratcher, along with Katie Meadows and other members of Crossview Community Church, helped runners register for not just the 5K but also the one-mile “Fun Run” and the “Tot Trot”.
“It’s about the same number that we had last year,” Bratcher said of the turnout. “We had a lot more kids participate in the fun run so we’re glad to see that.”
Bratcher has mentioned that changes could be coming to the race in the future, such as making it a 10K or making it a road course.
“Some people really like that it is on the Silver Comet Trail and some people would rather it be a road race,” Bratcher said. “So we’ll see what happens with that next year.”
This year’s race was certified by USA Track and Field by local engineer Vince Adams which ensures that the race is a true 5,000-meter course.
This allows comparisons to other certified races and can help runners get seeded into larger events like the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta.
