Alan Dozier, the fire chief for the Georgia Forestry Commission, says the fires in Chatham, Floyd, Gordon, Tattnall and Worth counties burned a combined 10 acres. He estimates July fireworks typically cause 10 to 12 wildfires in Georgia during an average year.
Dozier and local fire departments across the state urged Georgians to use extreme caution lighting any fireworks - even sparklers - over the holiday weekend because of severe drought conditions.
Two counties close to a vast fire burning in the Okefenokee Swamp - Camden and Ware counties - enacted temporary bans on fireworks.
