Moore's Soda Fountain, 402 Main St., Cedartown, has been transformed
in preparation for filming of "Jayne Mansfield's Car," which will
co-star Billy Bob Thornton and Robert Duvall. Production crews this
week covered the building's murals with removable blocks, which will
be painted to look like a brick wall. Filming for the movie, which is
set in 1969, is to begin later this month. (Lowell Vickers/thepolkfishwrap.com)

It hasn’t exactly been a secret that a Hollywood movie will be filmed in Cedartown, but details have been few and slow to come out as those “in the know” deferred to the film’s producers to make the official announcement.

The silence was officially broken Thursday with the announcement of a meeting with downtown business and property owners, followed quickly by the casting director’s call for local people to appear as extras.

“We are looking for men and women, a few kids but mostly ages 18 to 60 or so with timeless looks, as this film is set in 1969,” said Patrick Ingram, the extras casting director for "Jayne Mansfield's Car.”

“We really want folks with no modern hair dye jobs, piercings, etc.” Ingram said. “We very much are in need of people that would like to be extras that have cars 1969 or older.”

Casting for extras will be handled initially by email. Ingram said interested applicants should send “a good clear recent photo or two of yourself and your clothing sizes and height, and all contact information. If you have a car, send a picture of the car as well.”

Photos should be sent to Ingram at ecaindie@gmail.com as soon as possible, as filming is expected to begin by the third week of June.

Additional details about the film are to be announced at a meeting scheduled next Tuesday with Mark Cottrell, the location manager of Market Films. Access to the meeting is reserved for downtown property owners, business owners and the media.

“Jayne Mansfield’s Car” is a project of actor Billy Bob Thornton. He will be starring in the movie, along with actor Robert Duvall. Thornton stopped in Cedartown in late April while scouting filming locations, and word quickly spread that Cedartown was a likely film location.

Among the details that have already become widely known are that filming locations are to include the West Cinema and Moore’s Soda Fountain.

"It's another Southern tale," says Duvall. "It puts Tennessee Williams in the back seat - it's that brilliant."

"It's about a guy in between WWI and WWII who raises a family after his wife left him for an Englishman and moved to England," says Duvall. "When the wife dies, she asks to be brought back to Alabama to be buried, and at that point the character hasn't seen her in 20 or 30 years. The two families - her original family she abandoned and her English family - meet and then things get really interesting."

I imagine they will show some of the time between WWI and WWII as flashbacks or something. Just saying.

Thank you I did read the link I posted and caught that just after I corrected myself incorrectly.

But thanks anyway.

Since they reference both time periods maybe you can forgive me. I wasn't clear on which time period they were focusing on Cedartown for.

My point was still that its a small southern town a long time ago.

correction Allmylife is here ... the movie is set in 1969... if you read the link you posted you will see that it clearly states the movie takes place 20-30 years after WWI and WWII... which would be around... yes, 1969.

I'm sure the casting director knows the time period of the movie he is directing.... just saying

The location manager of the movie, Mark Cotrell said he believed they had all the extras and cars they needed at a meeting on Tuesday. You are welcome to send an email to make sure.

We will try and get another update of the work they are doing to dress up some of the buildings for the film soon.

I read the other day, they already have all the extras and cars they need. This was just after the Post on the Polk Fish Wrap of extras and cars needed. Anyone else know about this or does anyone at the Cedartown Standard know about this. An update on progress of what they are doing downtown with pictures would be nice or have I missed this somewhere?

Are we worried about them thinking we are hicks? I mean a guy named BILLY BOB is producing it.

What's so bad about hicks anyways? Hicks are just good country folks. Nothing wrong with that. I don't think TAXPAYER was being negative I think you just took it that way.

We ARE hicks anyways - I mean not all of us but a decent percentage. Before you say I am talking about YOUR town, I have never lived anywhere else in my entire life, I went to school here and I own a business here I love this town too. SO much so that I have never left it and have built a good life here - but it is what it is. I for one love it for what it is - a town full of hicks.

Do you think the movie folks expected a whole bunch of people with degrees and culture? Or people who seemed like they lived in a small town in Alabama in 1969. Do you know what the movie is about and where it is set?

This is a very special time in Cedartown and it disturbs me to read a comment like the previous one above. TAXPAYER 2011, we are proud of Cedartown and if you cannot say anything good about the people that live here or our town, dont say anything at all. Alot of visiters read this paper and people like you makes them not want to visit. Find something positive to do with your time or move to a place you can be happy. No one needs to be so unhappy as you.

Sorry about that. Occasionally when something gets posted to the website from an email the spacing of the words gets messed up. That's also why the words location and fountain were spread away from the rest of the sentences.

I fixed the formatting issues. The correct email address ecaindie@gmail.com
