Childhood obesity problem grows in Georgia

Georgia is the only state to enact a full range of laws to regulate food and beverage health in child care facilities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In its 2011 Children's Food Environment State Indicator Report, the CDC noted only Georgia restricts sugar drinks, requires access to drinking water throughout the day and to limits television and computer screen time at child care facilities.

The positive moves come at the right time, as the report also shows the Peach State is among 32 states that are at or below the national average for the Modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI), a measure of the proportion of food retailers that typically sell healthy foods within a state.
