ATLANTA -- The Georgia Legislature has approved extending unemployment benefits for thousands of residents for another 20 weeks.

The measure passed in the House and Senate in the final moments of the last day of the legislative session. It would apply to 22,000 people who were set to lose those benefits on July 1. They will now get the benefit until Dec. 31.

Democratic Sen. Hardie Davis of Augusta says the plan will not cost the state any additional money.

The bill now heads to the governor for his signature.
