ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A police officer was shot and killed and another officer was wounded Tuesday afternoon in the Athens area, authorities said.

One officer was killed and a second officer was badly wounded and was being treated at a local hospital, Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman told The Associated Press.

The officers were trying to stop a suspect in a carjacking, Holeman said.

Details about the officers involved were not immediately

Athens-Clarke police swarmed an area off Atlanta Highway in a massive search for the shooting suspect after the gunfire was reported around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Police on Tuesday afternoon were searching house-by-house for a suspect, whom they describe as a 33-year-old man. Authorities said they were also looking for a silver Geo Prizm with Georgia plates.

Five schools and a pre-kindergarten program in the area were locked down Tuesday afternoon as a precaution while police searched for the suspect, whom they described as armed and dangerous.
