ATLANTA (AP)-- Health officials in Georgia plan to announce the launch of a statewide awareness and prevention campaign meant to reduce HIV infection among black women.

The Georgia Department of Community Health plans to announce the Sistas Organizing to Survive initiative Thursday.

The announcement is timed to coincide with National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to urge people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and to raise awareness of its impact on women and girls. It is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health.

It is observed on March 10 every year, but the agency encourages organizations to hold events throughout the month of March.
