Cedartown recreation girls softball recently sent two teams to compete in the District 5 tournament held in Calhoun on June 23 through June 25.

In the first game of the tournament, the Cedartown “B Team,” managed by Tim White, played a good game but fell short against a strong Calhoun squad.

In the second game of the night, the Cedartown “A Team” coached by Joy Owens, Stan Davis, Greg McElwee and Ashley Davis, scored 18 runs to get the win over Summerville, 18-1.

This led to a second round match up between Cedartown A and Calhoun, and Cedartown B facing Summerville. Next was Calhoun against Cedartown A.

With their backs against the wall in the fourth inning, and down 4-0, Cedartown started a comeback.

The inning started with Cassidy Davis sending a hard line drive to the fence for a double. Teyana Prior followed with another hard hit, scoring Davis from second.

The hot bats continued, leading the score to 4-3, with Jessi McElwee on third and one out. Heather Swafford reached on a great bunt, and next up was Joy Leigh Owens.

Owens laid down a beautiful bunt for the sacrifice to score McElwee from third to tie the game up. Two more runs would score the inning, making the score 6-4 in favor of Cedartown.

That’s the way the score would stay thanks to some solid defense including some great work at catcher by Ava Tillman and solid outfield play by Sydney Blackmon.

This put Calhoun in the loser’s bracket to play the Cedartown B team. The B team played a great game, but Calhoun proved too strong.

The championship game was set with Cedartown A versus Calhoun.

During the first of a possible two-game stretch, Cedartown made a few mistakes, and Calhoun capitalized, winning 11-3.

That proved to be as close as Calhoun would get, as the girls came out in the next game pumped up and ready to play.

Cedartown started the game with one out, and the hot-hitting by Claypool on first, when Davis launched her first over the fence homerun to give Cedartown the early 2-0 lead.

The Cedartown bats remained hot and the defense was solid.

This lead to a convincing 11-0 shutout win in five innings securing Cedartown A a spot in the state tournament in Waycross on July 10-12 as district champions.
