A Cartersville police officer has been placed on administrative duty while state officials investigate a Sunday evening shooting incident, reports stated.

According to Chief Thomas N. Culpepper of the Cartersville Police Department:

Last night at approximately 11:30 p.m. officers of the Cartersville Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a burglary in progress at 301 Industrial Park Road, Schnitzer Recycling.

When the officers arrived, they encountered suspects Steven Haynes Clark and Joseph Adam Bowlen. Clark attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended. Bowlen allegedly attacked one of the responding officers, and the officer shot the suspect. The suspect was transported, via Life Flight, to Grady Hospital in Atlanta where he later died.

Cartersville police requested The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct an investigation into the shooting.
