The Cedartown City Commission Monday night approved a conditional use request for CedarChem LLC for a warehouse and office at 105 Plantation Ave., Cedartown.
The property had a C-2 (commercial) zoning and the conditional use request was needed to authorize the planned use. The proposal had already cleared the Cedartown Planning Commission.
Speaking in favor of the project was CedarChem owner Scott Wright. None appeared in opposition.
Wright’s company supplies chemicals to municipalities and industries for water and wastewater treatment. The City of Cedartown has been a customer.
Wright said the company began out of his house, but has grown to the point that it needs a separate location. The business now employs four people in Cedartown, and he said “I hope to have up to 10 at that location,” provided the business continues to grow as it has.
In response to questions, Wright assured commissioners that the warehouse would not contain any hazardous or noxious chemicals. It would be used only to store a small amount of “polymers,” which are harmless and do not produce any gases or odors.
“It’s better for me to ship to the end user from the manufacturer,” Wright explained. However, some supplies require a “long lead time” when ordered, so he has to keep a small warehouse stock to supply customers, he said.
Wright’s request was unanimously approved by the commission. Present were commissioners Dale Tuck, Scott Tillery, John Barrett and Chairman Larry Odom. Commissioner Gary Martin was unable to attend the meeting.
