A 19-year-old Rockmart man has been arrested and charged as one of the three men assaulting and robbing a 75-year-old Aragon man Thursday.

Brandon Lee Waddell of 2340 Bellview Rd., Rockmart, was arrested Friday and charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated batter and elder abuse.

He remains in the Polk County Jail.

Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd said an attempt was made to interview Waddell in hopes of discovering the identities of the others suspected in the armed robbery, but he said Waddell has asked for an attorney.

According to Polk County Police Department reports, 75-year-old Bennie Wigley was at his Collard Valley Road home when three men knocked on his door just after midnight last Thursday. Wigley told police the men told Wigley they had run out of gas and asked if he had any to spare.

Wigley stated in reports the three followed him as he went to the barn to get a gas can. While at the barn, Wigley said he was hit on the back of the head from behind and knocked unconscious.

The officer at the scene said Wigley was bleeding from the back of his head. Wigley reported his wallet missing.
