The Cedartown City Commission Monday decided to delay action one more month on a contract for phone and internet service through Parker Fibernet.

Commissioners asked for additional details about the contract and the city’s franchise agreement. However, commissioners stressed that the are supportive and excited about the new capacity that the company is bringing to the area.

Company spokesman David Parker thanked commissioners and provided a brief update on what the company is doing.

Parker FiberNet plans to install a fiber ring through Polk County, connecting to a ring in Paulding County, that will provide local businesses and government with “cost effective, high speed data and internet connectivity and customized voice communication connectivity.”

Parker said his plans include linking to the city’s industrial park, at no cost to the city.

“It’s a great advantage to have fiber for industrial recruitment,” Parker said. “This puts you at the forefront of technology, rather than at technology’s back leg.”

The technology allows nearly unlimited bandwidth, he said. He said technologies such as DSL provide high capacity for downloading data but greatly restricted uploading bandwidth. Fiber optics provides great uploading bandwidth required by banks, hospitals and many other industries, he said.

“It supports our goal of attracting clean, light industry,” Odom said.
