On Thursday afternoon, principals from Rockmart Middle School and Cedartown Middle School were presented with new, compact automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) at the Polk County Board of Education in Cedartown.
Cintas presented the AEDs to the schools completely free of charge as a part of their 2008 grant program. During the year, public school-affiliated groups from all over the country applied to receive one of 100 complimentary automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) from Cintas Corporation.
In addition, Cintas is also offering AED units at a significant discount to all public schools through September 30, 2009.
Only 100 defibrillators were given out across the nation, and Rockmart and Cedartown schools both qualified to receive one.
“This is a statistical phenomenon,” laughed Bobby Ward, presenter and Cintas staff member of 7 years. “I don’t think you guys will have this sort of luck in next year’s program.”
In attendance were Cedartown principal Lucy Cromer, along with former and subsequent Rockmart principals Judy Wiggins and Shannon Husley. Buddy Harrison, credited with the local publicity and success of the program, was also present.
According to the American Heart Association, the automated external defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device that checks a person’s heart rhythm and can deliver a life-saving shock to restart a heart.
AEDs can not only save students, but also staff, parents and visitors who frequent the school on a daily basis. It is estimated that as much as 20 percent of a community’s population visits local schools on any given day.
The American Heart Association advises that individuals with access to an AED within a few minutes of experiencing cardiac arrest have up to an 80 percent chance of survival. The odds of survival drop to less than two percent after the first 10 minutes, which is about the average response time for an EMS to arrive after the initial call to 911.
“The nurses are so excited. I wish they could be here too.” said Judy Wiggins.
"This is the best day I've had in a long time," said Ward. "It's not everyday I get to travel and (present AEDs) to schools in need."
The AEDs, valued at $1500, will be present during school days and at several sporting events at both middle schools.
In the event of a medical emergency, having an automated external defibrillator (AED) readily available could mean the difference between life-and-death.
