The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Polk, Floyd and several other Northwest Georgia counties until 10 a.m.

So far this morning, wind speeds of 25 mph with gusts of 39 mph have been recorded at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport in Rome. Winds are expected to decrease after early this morning.

The winds downed trees, tree limbs and power lines, causing widespread outages in Polk County.

Carol Boatwright, a Georgia Power Co. spokesperson, said an estimated 7,200 customers were without power this morning in Polk County. That included about 5,000 in the Cedartown area.

"You have the distinction of being one of the hardest hit areas of the state," Boatwright said.

Trees and power lines were reported down in several areas, including Park Street and Pace Street in Cedartown; and much of the Goodyear Village area of Rockmart was without power this morning.

Parts of downtown Cedartown remained without power at 9:15 a.m. The Cedartown Standard and other businesses on the east side of Main Street had power, but businesses on the other side of the street remained without power at 9:15 a.m.

The traffic light at the intersection of Main Street and West Avenue in Cedartown has been out since early Monday morning. Other traffic lights near downtown Cedartown were still working.

Most of the problems appear to be wind-related, and several large feeder lines are down. Crews have been called in from the Atlanta area to help to restore power.

Because there are so many problems scattered across the county, no estimate on when power would be restored was available.

"We expect to see the numbers go up and down this morning," Boatwright said. "With the weather we're having, we'll get power restored in one place, and then a few minutes later another tree limb could fall on the same power line."

The strom also brought more rain. Some 0.74 inches of rain has fallen since last night, according to measurements from the airport in Rome.
