Two years ago, local businessman Scott Tillery was elected to the Cedartown City Commission to fill an unexpired term following the death of Bert Woods.

He is seeking re-election to a full term in Tuesday’s municipal election.

“I am running for re-election because I think it is important for us to finish some very necessary reforms that this commission has started,” Tillery said.

Among the top items on Tillery’s agenda, he lists completing the downtown Streetscape project, renovating the water plant, finalizing the zoning and recreation master plans, cleaning up the community and improving the economic viability of local factories and stores.

“I want to make Cedartown the kind of place that our children will want to be a part of – to live here, work here, and play here,” Tillery said. “That means we have to create an environment that will attract good jobs.

“Part of this will be economic incentives like tax abatement and job creation tax credits that we have in progress,” he explained. “But we also must focus on amenities like parks, trails, restaurants, and interesting places to shop.”

Tillery said it takes a lot of teamwork to get things done in the public sector. He said he appreciates the help and cooperation of state and county agencies in making it possible to maintain good levels of public service during these hard economic times.

“And I sincerely appreciate the teamwork of my fellow city commissioners as we have labored to stretch our limited resources to meet increasing demands for public service,” Tillery said.

A lifelong resident of Cedartown, Tillery has a long record of civic involvement. He is a member of Caledonia Lodge #121, the Yaarab Shrine Club and the Optimists.

Tillery has served as an officer or member of the Boys and Girls Club, the Polk and Bartow Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Cedartown Booster Club, and the Cedartown High School Century Club.

Likewise, Tillery’s community service work has been extensive. He is a former member of the Cedartown Historic Preservation Commission and currently serves as a member of the Cedartown Development Authority, the Polk County Development Authority, the Northwest Georgia Regional Development Authority and the board of the Polk County Chamber of Commerce,

Tillery is married to Ann Marie Mullen Tillery. They have two sons, Russell and Clayton. The Tillerys attend First Methodist Church of Cedartown, where he serves as a Trustee of the church board.

A graduate of Cedartown High School, Tillery attended Floyd College in Rome. He is employed by local plumbing contractor PCPS.
