For seventh-grader Abbey Godfrey, the title of Polk County spelling bee champ came down to one lukewarm word: tepid.

T-e-p-i-d.

Godfrey spelled her way to a first-place win Tuesday morning during the Polk School District’s annual Spelling Bee.

She competed against seven other Polk County students to clinch the title. Godfrey was presented with a dictionary and thesaurus set by district curriculum director Laurie Atkins, compliments of the Polk County Chamber of Commerce.

Spelling Bee runner-up was Young’s Grove Elementary fourth-grader Ethan Lester.

All participants of the spelling bee took home goodie bags from First National Bank and Suntrust Bank.

Participants were: Nallely Auguilar – Cherokee Elementary; Lane Harp – Eastside Elementary; Sara Ann Robinson – Northside Elementary; Caedyn Robinson – Van Wert Elementary; Nolan Holland – Westside Elementary; Logan Maddox – Cedartown Middle School; Godfrey and Lester.

All participants were first-place winners of their respective school’s spelling bee.

Judges for the event were Joyce Mink, Patti Needham and Dale Tuck.

Lynda Rutland served as caller for the event.
