Children are not only reading at the Cedartown Public Library, some of them are writing their own stories.

Local artist, Julia Knight, worked with previous library branch manager, Sharon Cleveland, to bring in five of her sculptures to exhibit in the library. The sculptures were made by Knight in Cedartown and will be at the Library indefinitely.

Knight said that she had the idea to display the statues in the library and to encourage children to write their own stories about the characters portrayed in the statues. Due to the decline of art and music education in our public school systems, Knight felt that someone needed to encourage children in the community to use their creativity to make something.

According to Knight, art classes at the library would require lots of materials and work, but having kids do these writing exercises only requires a pencil, some paper and the child's imagination.

Knight feels that practicing art not only helps to build fine motor skills, but also helps children learn to make decisions.

"Am I going to choose red or am I going to choose purple, these are creative decisions," said Knight. "It's a simple little exercise in decision making, but it's very important to democracy to be able to make a decision."

The sculptures are of a baseball player, a ballerina, a donkey a crying baby and little boy blue. They are all located in the children's book are. Each sculpture has a notepad and pencil in front of it for children to use to write their own stories about the characters portrayed in the sculptures.

The following are some stories written by children at the Cedartown public library about the statues:

Crying Baby:

"I think she is sad. She wants her momma."

"The angry two-year-old. Her name is Ulstra. She is feeling hysterically evil be cause she just created a ray gun able to get all expensive jewelry in a 50 mile radius. When she realizes it would fly in with too high velocity, she gets MAD."

Little Boy Blue:

He is sad because he is blue.

He was swinging on a swing set one day. He seen something on the other side of the playground and he lost his balance and fell off the swing set. When he fell he started to cry. When his mom came she sang some blues music. The baby stopped crying and turned blue.

Baseball Player:

One day James and his friend were going to play baseball.

"Can I join?" a boy asked.

"Sure," said James.

James asked the boy his name the boy said "Alex."

Alex was studying their moves on how they played. One of the girls tried to hit the ball but missed.

Alex laughed band said, "Wow! You don't know how to play, do you?"

The girl started crying.

"Hey stop that, it's not nice to pick on someone!" James yelled.

"You know what? I don’t need you. I got friends of my own," Alex yelled back.

He walked home and cried because he didn’t have any friends.

The sculpture's name is Yogi Berra, the most famous Yankees' hind pitcher in history. Berra took his game seriously, so he will not go down without a fight.

Once the umpire made a bad call, so Berra is arguing with the umpire. Berra just threw a bullet to second because someone was stealing a base. The guy who stole was out by a mile, but the umpire said he was safe. He didn’t like that so he has to argue.
