Members of Boy Scout Troop 40 in Cedartown had the duty Sunday afternoon of putting out American flags in preparation for Labor Day.

Old Glory was hung from wall mounts on downtown buildings provided by the city and merchants along Main Street, along with several other locations in Cedartown.

The flag duty taken on by the Scouts is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club. Troop 40 meets at Anna Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church and the troop is also sponsored by the local Exchange Club.

Cedartown Kiwanis appreciates the hard work by Boy Scout Troop 40 in displaying our American flags on state holidays--and the leadership of our club members in supporting this work as one of our long-time projects.

If any business on or near Main Street is interested in supporting Cedartown Kiwanis and the Boy Scouts through the display of a flag in front of your business, it is a small fee of $20 per year. This fee covers our costs in keeping the wall mounts and flags in good condition, and supports other Troop 40 activities; with this arrangement, you don't have to store a flag between holidays, or worry about it not being handled in a respectful way. We are proud to provide beautiful American flags throughout the year to show our city and national pride; I think it is a most beautiful sight to look down Main Street and see Old Glory flying in the breeze!

A jerk who was a Scoutmaster alienated me from a local Troop and even from being a Scout but it never dampened my enthusiasm for Scouting and what it stands for and what it can mean to boys in their formative years. I especially appreciate those dedicated and hardworking leaders who mean so much to the boys during their time in Scouting and in later years. One "bad apple" Scoutmaster certainly didn't spoil the whole Scouting barrel.
