A Rockmart man may need surgery after being injured in a three-vehicle crash in Rockmart Aug. 21, according to Georgia State Patrol (GSP) officials.

Jackie Cope was last listed in the intensive care unit of Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta, according to Trooper P.R. Rampy.

Cope was airlifted after a dump truck slammed into his 1977 Ford pick-up on Atlanta Highway near Blue Hole Road around noon Aug. 21.

Cope was the only serious injury and suffered possible eye damage, according to reports.

However, the hospital does not have a record of Cope as a patient so an updated condition is not available.

The dump truck driver, identified as Steve Mann of Buchanan, was cited for following too close. Mann told troopers he was distracted and struck Cope, who had stopped to turn at the intersection.

Cope’s vehicle was shoved into a third vehicle identified as a 1996 Ford pickup, Rampy said.

Cope will also likely be cited for not wearing a seatbelt, Rampy said. However, the trooper said he would wait until he has heard Cope’s side of the story.
